Mokoan - return to wetland

Introduction
The Mokoan project aims to generate an overall average water saving each year of approximately 44,000 ML to improve the health of the Broken, Goulburn, Snowy and Murray Rivers.

Re-introduction of a Mid-Murray storage into the River Murray regulated supply system will enable the capture and storage of 19,000 ML of these water savings annually.

Water captured can be released back into the Murray System on demand, reducing potential shortfalls in the Sunraysia Region resulting from system constraints, particularly the Barmah Choke.

Once this mid-system storage is in place, Lake Jindabyne will release 19,000 ML less into the Murray system. In its place 19,000 ML will be released into the Snowy River each year to provide important environmental flows.

Works Required

The Mid-Murray Storage Project will capture a portion of the flow saved by decommissioning Lake Mokoan, and store this water at Lake Boga, Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake. To allow effective release of the captured unregulated flow back in the River Murray, Lake Boga needs a new outlet channel.

New or enhanced channels are also required to ensure the Mid-Murray Storage Project does not aggravate flooding problems associated with flows from the Avoca River and Loddon River.

Options to outfall water from Lake Boga were considered including channels to the Little Murray River or the River Murray, passing under the Little Murray weir pool. Based on environmental, heritage, planning, geotechnical and costing assessments a channel supplying water to the Little Murray River was preferred.

Affected landowners have been consulted on the options, and advised why the preferred option was chosen.

The proposed works will affect a limited number of landowners downstream of Kangaroo Lake and farming enterprises downstream of Lake Boga.

The three lakes will be filled from May to November each year and flows will be discharged during the irrigation months.
