The Mid-Murray Storage Project will incorporate three
major lakes including Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake in
the Gannawarra Shire and Lake Boga in the Rural City of
Swan Hill, which are all part of the Torrumbarry Irrigation
Area.
The Gannawarra Shire is located in the Loddon Murray
region in Northern Victoria 280km from Melbourne. The
Rural City of Swan Hill is 60km north of Gannawarra, on
the banks of the River Murray 340km from Melbourne.
Both Shires take in a number of small towns and exhibit
a diverse range of agriculture and horticulture. The many
lakes, creeks and rivers in the area offer excellent opportunities
for water sports and recreation.
Aptly titled waterbird wonderland, the area boasts over
100 rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands. Yachting, power
boating and camping facilities are offered at Lakes Charm,
Kangaroo and Boga, with safe swimming beaches at all lakes.
The Kerang Wetlands, which extends from Hird Swamp in
the south to Lake Tutchewop in the north, is made up of
more than 50 lakes and marshes, and have long been regarded
as the mecca for duck shooters and fishing enthusiasts.
Many of the lakes and marshes provide the ideal habitat
for all types of waterbirds and Middle Lake is the site
of one of the world's largest ibis rookeries.
